Dawn Watling is the Director of the Social Development Lab and is a Professor in Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. Dawn studied psychology at Mount Allison University (Canada) and took an MSc in Developmental Psychology at University of Sussex, where she also completed a PhD. She previously worked as a post-doctoral researcher on the Children’s Social Behaviour Project at the University of Sussex, which was sponsored by Brighton & Hove City Council. Her research focuses on children’s social and emotional development, including children’s development of an understanding of reputation management and emotion recognition, and how these link to mental health and well-being.
Beatrice Hayes is a Teaching Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London . Beatrice previously completed her BSc (Dual Honours) in Educational Studies and Psychology, followed by her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at University of Keele, and her PhD here at Royal Holloway, University of London. Beatrice worked in primary education for 3 years before starting her PhD. Beatrice’s PhD research explored primary school children’s use of social networking sites. Beatrice’s research also explores university students’ self-disclosure behaviours online and higher education teaching staff’s use of digital education.
Gemma Rides is a Postgraduate Researcher and Teaching Associate at at Royal Holloway, University of London under the supervision of Prof. Dawn Watling and Prof. Helen Pote. Gemma studied a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Mental Health at Royal Holloway. Gemma’s research interest is in the relationship between adolescents’ use of online platforms and their mental health. Her PhD research focuses on understanding the links between adolescents’ online social communicative behaviour on social media, in particular their use of likes, comments and shares, and their levels of social anxiety.
Zain Khan is a postgraduate researcher at Royal Holloway, University of London under the supervision of Prof. Dawn Watling. Zain completed BS (hons) in Psychology and MS in Clinical Psychology from Pakistan. Her research interest is in the relationship between loneliness and emotion regulation among adolescents. Her PhD resrarch aims to characterize the interaction between loneliness and emotion regulation, and their impact on mood and wellbeing, using self-report measures with emotion induction and measurement of physiological, neural and subjective responses.
